Obituary for Alfred Barrett Carpenter Jr.

On Monday, January 30, 2023, Alfred Barrett Carpenter Jr., loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 87.

Alfred Barrett (known as Barry) was born on February 10, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Alfred and Dorothy Carpenter. He was raised in Reading, Pennsylvania where he attended early education. His family moved to Park Ridge, IL in his Junior year of highschool. He worked for CommEd for 39 years as a Lineman Crew Leader. He joined the Marine Reserves and became a Flight Engineer on the Hercules C130 with over 5,000 flight hours. After retiring he attended Marine Corps balls with his grandkids who carried on the legacy of serving in the Marine Corps. With his rank of Mastery Gunnery Sergeant and 37 years of service, he was honored as the oldest Marine at several Balls.

He met his true love, Ann, as her nursing patient in the surgical wing. They later married in 1961. Together they had two children, Elizabeth (Beth) and Al. After the loss of their son Al, his friend, Brian (Stephanie) Vrshek and their sons became very much a part of their family.

Barry was active throughout life. He hiked the Appalachian trail as a “Thru Hiker,” completed daily workouts, was a water skier and instructor, windsurfer, Sea Doo rider, runner, cyclist, roller skate dancer, motorcycle rider, snowmobiler, and everyone's favorite dance partner.

He lived in Mt Prospect until retiring to Washington Island WI. He enjoyed fixing any broken “toy” he could get his hands on and was the master of his garage. He was a ruthless Marbles player that felt everyone should learn to play. He worked on the Rock Island Ferry and with his dump truck and backhoe. Barry and Ann enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends. He cherished his visits with friends and family as they trekked between Washington Island and Naples.

Barry Carpenter is survived by his sister Bea (Duane Barnes) Young, sister-in-law Kim Carpenter, sister Barbara (Matt) Rezmer, brother Jack (Lynn) Carpenter, daughter Elizabeth Dusik, his beloved grandchildren, Kayse (Tim) Lavin, Matthew (Hannah) Dusik, Jesse (Mitch Pittner) Dusik, Izabell (Brice Balosky) Dusik, Lucas Dusik, six great-grandchildren Avery, Paxton, Abigail, Jack, Elliot, Arlee, as well as nieces, nephews, and other family members. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Ann, his son Al Carpenter, his sister Dotty Ellis, bother Richard Carpenter, his sister-in-law Martha (Don Hagen; Milton Dulong), brother-in-laws Everett (Genevieve), Klemmet, Jacob (Shirley) Ellefson, two nephews, and many other dear friends and family members.

A funeral service will be held on March 18th, 2023 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church (200 S Willie St, Mt. Prospect, IL 60056). There will be a visitation from 9 am to 11 am, the funeral service will begin at 11 am, and a luncheon will follow the service.
