Obituary for Aurora Schmidt

Aurora Schmidt died peacefully at Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice, Bonita Springs, FL on August 31, 2020.

Aurora is preceded in death by husband Gustav. She is survived by her daughter Dawn (husband Charles), their children Nicholas & Jacquelyn, seven brothers, a sister, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Aurora was born on December 18, 1930. She was part of a large family and grew up on the family farm completing her morning chores before providing daily care for her younger siblings. She met her husband Gustav while living in NY and was happily married for 25 years. She retired in 1999 and moved to MD to be near her daughter, son in law, and grandchildren, and in 2019 made her last move to FL.

Aurora enjoyed going for walks, working in her garden, bird watching, playing bingo, going on trips, and sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. She spent countless hours as a volunteer at her grandchildren’s elementary school where she is still remembered today. She was so proud of her daughter and loved her grandchildren with all her heart enjoying their visits and hearing of their experiences and adventures. She looked forward to her weekly tea & coffee visits with her daughter, and chatting with, and cheering on, her grandchildren at their athletic events.

Aurora endlessly welcomed family and friends into her home and was the ultimate hostess never leaving a guest hungry - you always left with a doggie bag. She was a very compassionate person, always had a smile on her face, and worried more about everyone else than herself. She effected change in the world and will be missed.

A private memorial service will be held in FL in September with a more traditional memorial service planned in NY for next year.

In lieu of flowers, tributes in Aurora’s memory can be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908 or online www.hopehcs.org
