Obituary for Betty June Ely
Betty June Ely of Marco Island, Florida went to heaven on December 30th, 2014. Her husband Ted of 60 years was there at the Avow Hospice Care Facility in Naples to give his last kiss and blessing. Betty was born May 26th, 1927 in Aldan, PA, daughter of Elizabeth and Everett Steel, both deceased.
Betty graduated from Upper Darby High School, PA in 1945 after serving in the May Queens Court. She attended the Phila Industrial Art School before being employed by the University of Pennsylvania, then Matlack Trucking Company. After marriage she did an excellent job with the Shefield Furniture Company of Paoli, PA as an interior decorator and sales person. Her sales figures were so outstanding she got the nick-name of “The Paoli Pencil”. In 1954 she married Theodore H. Ely, a former high school classmate. Their 60-year partnership was one of extreme love and quality. Betty was affectionately known for her exceptional female clothing designs. In later life, her specialty was providing one of a kind ladies jackets which, according to her many friends, were outstanding. Betty loved to play golf and travel. She visited 35 countries before heart and pulmonary problems curtailed her ability to travel. One of her favorites was Grindewald, Switzerland where she was awarded “Guest of Honor” by the Chamber of Commerce in 2001.
Betty’s sister, Lois, preceded her in death in 1954. Lois was not only Betty’s sister, but her very best friend. Betty is survived by her niece Susan Keese Pyatak and family of South Newfane, VT and nephew Jay Keese and family of Alexandria, VA.
With her husband Ted, Betty made magnificent and beautiful homes through the years in Drexel Hill and Malvern, PA; Princeton and Convent Station, NJ; Linville Ridge, NC and Marco Island, FL.
Her country club memberships were Spring Brook (Morristown, NJ), Island C.C. (Marco Island, FL), Linville Ridge NC, and Naples National G.C. (Naples, FL). She volunteered frequently at Habitat for Humanity. Betty’s contagious smile and super friendly disposition made many friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are welcomed at Habitat for Humanity of Collier County, 11145 Tamiami Trail E., Naples, FL 34113.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Wesley Methodist Church, Marco Island, 350 S. Barfield Dr., Marco Island, FL 34145, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 14, 2015.
