Carol Ann Wallman
June 15, 1943 – December 30, 2020
Carol Ann Wallman [Newberry] died on Wednesday December 30, 2020 after 77 years of a well-lived life.
Born in Lynn Massachusetts and raised in Iowa, Carol applied her intelligence and energy to a wide variety of activities. As a girl, she spent time playing piano and the e-flat clarinet, as well as singing in choirs. When she wasn’t in the music room (or studying!), she was using her talent for organization and leadership as a cheerleader, president of the youth church board, and vice president of her senior class.
After graduating Muscatine High School as valedictorian in 1961, Carol went on to get a bachelor’s in Mathematics with a minor in English from Iowa Wesleyan; a Master’s in Education from Eastern Michigan University; and a specialist degree from Wayne State University. She was a gifted teacher and educator for over 33 years in Trenton Public Schools and was honored to be voted best math teacher by the students. In the final decade of her career, she was promoted to Director of Human Resources for the school system.
In 1961 she met fellow IWU student, Barry Wallman while selling popcorn on campus. As their love story unfolded they married in 1963 and began a family. Following a job offer for him in the auto industry, they spent most of their married life in southeast Michigan, working and raising their two children, Brian and Sarah.
Throughout the years, her energy and passionate curiosity continued. Those who might have been fooled by Carol’s reserved demeanor and small frame were often surprised to learn that she had her pilot’s license, or she had a 15-year streak of running every single day! That same venturing spirit led her family across the world, caught up in her great love of travel: from the first trip to Germany in 1974, on to Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, India, Galapagos Islands, South America, Costa Rica, Alaska, Ireland and many more. And after they returned from these life-enriching experiences, the passion that drove her to travel would then combine with her organizational genius to produce wonderful books of photographs and commentary about the beautiful scenery and many fabulous meals!
She was undeniably adventurous, but was also the steady center for those fortunate enough to be in her life. To those closest to her, Carol was a gracious host, a firm friend, a loving and dedicated spouse, mother and grandmother. She loved to feed her family and entertain, enjoyed tossing a Bocce ball and playing Mah Jongg, and looked forward to any family card game (especially if she got to lay down a Quattro)! In the community, she was an active church member who volunteered for many organizations to help children, feed the hungry and enrich the lives of others.
Carol possessed a quiet grace and great strength. Both of these aided her, not to mention her family, in her seven-year fight against ovarian cancer. When that battle ended, she was at home, surrounded by many of those who loved her best.
She is survived by her loving husband Barry; devoted daughter Sarah (Patrick) O’Hare; 5 cherished grandchildren: Quinn and Catherine O’Hare, Samantha, Ian and Alexandra Wallman; mother Dorothy Newberry; brothers Bob (Linda) Newberry and Jim (Kitty) Newberry; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her beloved son Brian Wallman and father F. Devere Newberry preceded her in death, and are surely keeping her company on her journey into the next life.
Funeral services will take place at the chapel at North Naples Church, 6000 Goodlette-Frank Rd, Naples Florida at 10:00 am on January 2, 2021. Visitation preceding from 9:00 - 10:00. All welcome! Luncheon following. Memorial donations may be sent in her honor to a charity of your choice.
