Obituary for Edward Tassinari
Edward James Tassinari, 87, of Naples FL and Barnstable MA, passed away Nov 12, peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Beverly (Hull) of Woburn, MA, his son Brian Tassinari of Bonita Springs, FL and his daughter Carolyn and her husband James Mader of Madison, CT. His greatest joy in life was being Grandpa to his three grandchildren, Matthew and Jonathan Mader of Madison, CT and Elizabeth Tassinari of Canton, MA
Born on April 23. 1933 in Quincy, MA, he was the only son of Edward Peter and Mary Ellen (Donovan) Tassinari. Ed grew up in Holbrook, MA where he graduated from Boston College High School Class of 1952. He attended Stonehill College prior to serving the country as an Ordinance Instructor at the Aberdeen School of Ordinance, Division of the United States Army in Aberdeen, Maryland and Texarkana, Texas from 1954-1956. After completing his service, Ed graduated from Boston University (’59) with a B.S. degree in Education and later returned to Boston University and graduated (’74) with a Master’s Degree in Education. In 1996 the Board of Trustees of Newbury College awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters.
Ed began his career in education as Director of American Training School from 1960-1962. In 1962 Ed founded Newbury School of Business. Which later became Newbury Junior College and then Newbury College; he served as president of the institution and as a trustee, until 1998 when he retired to his home on Cape Cod.
Ed truly loved his work and throughout his career and life he was involved in many different ventures. He was a member of the Boston-Melbourne Higher Education Task Force, 1993-1998, served on the Board of Governors at Tufts New England Medical Center, 1976 to present, he was a trustee at Agassiz Village 1974-1993, Ed was the founding director and treasurer of The ForSight Foundations, 1973-1988 and served as a trustee at The Nazareth Home from 1986-1995. Ed belonged to the Barnstable Village Civic Association, Boston College High School McElroy Society, The Clafin Society of Boston University, and the Beaver Country Day School Board of Governors.
When Ed was not working you could find him skiing the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the winter, fishing the waters of Cape Cod Bay or quail hunting in the woods of New England. He and his best friend Beverly traveled the world for many years. Ed spent his later years in Naples, FL only returning to Cape Cod for the summer.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a funeral service will be held in Barnstable, MA this coming spring and Ed will be laid to rest at Lothrop Cemetery with its view of Sandy Neck.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Newbury Center at Boston University where Ed’s legacy lives on. The Center was funded by a grant from Newbury College and was established to support first generation students.
