Obituary for Frederick R. Ling

Fred was born in 1932 in Patterson, NJ, to Millie and Walter Ling. He was raised in Hawthorne, Cupsaw Lake, and New Milford, NJ. He attended St. Joseph grammar school and Holy Trinity High School.

In January 1954, Fred joined the Navy and served in the Seabees. Earning the right to choose his assignment, he and Joyce, newly married on September 25, 1954, began their lifelong adventure on Guam.

Upon their return to NJ with their first-born son, Fred attended Fairleigh Dickinson University at night, where he earned his engineering degree in 1964, when his fourth child was just weeks old.

In all, Fred and Joyce had six children: Walter (Darcy), Valerie (Rick), Raymond (Wendy), Steven (Sandra), Beverly (Christopher), and Laura (Frank), as well as 13 grandchildren.

Fred was employed by R B & W Bolt & Nut Company in Portchester, NY (where one of his projects was the World Trade Center in NYC), and later was transferred to Ohio. Ultimately, he began his own business, which he continued even after the couple retired to Naples, FL.

Fred and Joyce loved each other deeply and had a devoted relationship for more than 68 years. Family was Fred’s pride and joy, and he and Joyce thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings. His dream of family connection will continue through his children and grandchildren.

Fred loved life and especially enjoyed golf and travel all over the world. He had a love for God and touched many lives along his journey. There is a quote from Charles Krauthammer who stated, “I lived the life I intended”. Fred lived the life he intended, and he did it so beautifully with no regrets.

Fred will be interred at St. Peter’s The Apostle Catholic Church in Naples. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
