Obituary for James J. Capeless Jr.

James Joseph (Jim) Capeless, Jr., 83, of Naples, Florida passed away on January 31, 2021. Jim was born on April 30, 1937 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts and attended Springfield public schools. He also attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the US Navy, he entered the then fledging computer industry where he spent his entire business career. He worked for Honeywell Information Systems and Prime Computer for 20 years.

In the mid 1980s, he joined VMark Software Systems, a Boston area “start up” as President/CEO and he took VMark public in 1992. He was selected as Spectrum International Man of the Year in 1990. Jim retired in 1996 and moved to Naples, Florida.

During most of his career, he lived in Acton, Massachusetts with his family. Prior to moving to Acton, he worked in Boston, Phoenix, and Washington DC and spent several years in foreign resident assignment in Tokyo, Frankfort and London. He also lived for seven years in Paris with his wife, Carol. Jim was known for his sharp wit and brilliant mind. His wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

He loved spending time with his wife, Carol, his daughter Cathy, who was his pride and joy, and his amazing grandson James (6), with whom he loved sharing baseball stories.

In addition to his family, Jim enjoyed reading, especially historical biographies, and spending time at his house on Squam Lake, New Hampshire. Jim especially loved to travel, in particular to his favorite city, Paris. He also enjoyed skiing, tennis and after moving to Naples, golf, as a member of the Country Club of Naples. He was often found joking with his many friends on the golf course. A diehard and devoted Red Sox fan, Jim had season tickets at Fenway and Jet Blue Park for years. He could recite almost any Red Sox stat, was a collector of baseball memorabilia and will be remembered for his bountiful love of all things baseball. He passed along his love of the Red Sox and baseball to his daughter and grandson.

Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol (McDonald) Capeless of Naples, FL; his daughter Cathy, her husband Jeff and his grandson James Bevelander of Port Washington, NY. He was pre-deceased by his three brothers Neil, John and Bill Capeless, all of Naples, FL. Due to Covid restrictions, a service will be held at a later time.

Remembrances may be made in Jim’s name to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. www.stjude.org
