Obituary for William John Mannlein

William John Mannlein was born January 9, 1935 in his mother’s bed on the family farm in St. Paul, Nebraska.

Already milking cows by the age of eight, Bill developed a work ethic that was the road to becoming a self-made man.

After graduating from St. Paul High School, Bill put himself through the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, earning a BS in Agriculture.

Bill had several jobs before landing in Louisville, Kentucky with Alcoa. Louisville was a fun spot for Bill, founding the Party of the Month club and acquiring his first convertible and boat, things he had always dreamed of owning. Best of all, he met and married Carolyn McGrath, with whom he had three children.

From his career with Alcoa, Bill was hired away by Fleming-Potter in Peoria, Illinois where he rose to be CEO of the company. Bill served the Peoria community in various positions of leadership at St. Francis Hospital, Better Banks, The Red Cross, and the Rotary Club.

Known by all as an honest, friendly gentleman, Bill had the skills to fix anything for anybody and he did so willingly. He was a self- taught woodworker who built fine furniture. He was an avid, skilled player of golf and tennis, and in his retirement played one or the other every day.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, Marie and Edward Mannlein, his sisters Florence Clark and Elaine Foster, as well as his first wife, Carolyn.

Bill is survived by his children Kathy (Steve) Mason, Dean (Susan) Mannlein, Brian (Karen) Mannlein, as well as seven grandchildren: Madeleine,Cole, Megan,Dylan, Taylor, Ava and Max.

In 1991, Bill married Dinah E. Laukitis, who survives alongside her children, Buck (Shelly)
Laukitis, Mindy (Chuck) Ellis, Dan (Lisa) Laukitis, and five grandchildren: Claire, Teal,
Mason, Jack and Walt.

In 2013, after a full life together in Peoria, Bill and Dinah retired to Pelican Marsh in Naples, Florida, where they participated enthusiastically in a variety of club activities.

Bill was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia eight years ago but retained his kind, gentle demeanor throughout. Services will be held for the family with a Celebration of Life this fall. Date to be announced. Donations may be made to Avow Hospice, Naples Senior Center or charity of one’s choice.
